My bad, I apologize. Sounds kinda like Starsector but the sector and graphics aren't precisely like Egosoft's X4 or X3 triangles/ship symbols on a map.

An alpha key was released a loooong time ago by a youtuber and it became the "unofficial demo" at that point by the developer who is indie and might be one to several people doing this for kicks.

There are a lot of mods for it. Game is written in Java. If you want any more details or you want the old alpha ToxicFrog, let me know. I'm able to run it on my Thinkpad X220 but the computer does get hot. I have to repaste and probably find a better fan.

The vanilla ships are well balanced, it had quite a following when I found it. That was about 1.5 or 2 years ago. The most complicated assets in the game are probably the particle effects. It looks nice for a 2d game.

The main thing most people might find kinda "huh?" about vanilla gameplay is that you have to pay upkeep on your ships, you need to buy fuel, you need to pay your crew. Like Sid Meyer's Pirates!. Weapons feel balanced, too. Developer got a lot of feedback when the alpha key was leaked and it became a "demo". Lots of players going into the combat simulator and spawning different ships

ToxicFrog: I hope my misunderstanding has helped you perhaps find a game that might scratch the itch you have. Also, since the game is written in Java, decompilation is much easier and one could with a bit of elbow grease, work over the engine to their needs. I don't think there is station building in it, but I might be wrong? It's been awhile.
