X3:AP is best as it's gonna get, X4 has Lua interface for drawing UI elements but it uses some XML metalanguage for scripting and changing the game... there is a <patch> element that acts like diff / patch but yeah it's a pain

Not only the assets in and of themselves, but what games have formats that are actually useful in some way or make sense for the design of the inital game and then for mod/third party support (forking, people actually modding, etc).
