00:27
< Rhamphoryncus>
iirc, you can declare a struct without defining it
00:28
< iospace>
so
00:28
< iospace>
i had the most epic typo today
00:28
< iospace>
i typoed "erasedisk" as "erasedick"
00:28
< Rhamphoryncus>
so publicly it's "struct foo" and you pass around a "struct foo *" (or "foo *"), but they don't know what fields it has and they can't create a copy of it. They can only copy the pointer
00:28
< Rhamphoryncus>
did it work?
00:28
< iospace>
sadly no =<
00:28
< Rhamphoryncus>
Clearly you didn't install the right package.. to remove your package
00:29
< iospace>
heh
00:29 * iospace is coming out at work tomorrow
00:29
< Rhamphoryncus>
oh?
00:29
< Rhamphoryncus>
mtf?
00:29
< iospace>
yup
00:29
< iospace>
XD
00:29
< iospace>
hence the epic typo :P
00:29
< Rhamphoryncus>
hehe
00:30 * Rhamphoryncus knows the jargon ;)
00:30
< iospace>
if i were cismale i wouldn't care but that was like "...oh hi freud"
00:30
< Rhamphoryncus>
yeah
00:50
<@ToxicFrog>
iospace: good luck!
00:50
< iospace>
thanks

20:49
<@Alek>
so uh.
20:50
<@Alek>
I need some feedback on an explanatory letter I'm writing the IRS.
20:50
<@Alek>
to (politely) tell them to go take a long walk.
20:51
<@Alek>
after they've sent me a notice claiming I owe them over $800 because they're applying one of my 2009 W2s to my 2010 return.
20:51
<~Vornicus>
Ask a lawyer.
20:51
<@TheWatcher>
^--
20:52
<@Alek>
no, I have the documentation to prove it. I just want a double-check on the explanatory letter, for language and such.
20:52
<~Vornicus>
oh. proofreading is a different matter
20:53
<@Alek>
also, that I'm including the correct documentation (2010 1040 and W2 forms, and the 2009 W2 in question).
20:53
<@Alek>
like maybe should I include the 2009 1040 as well?
20:53
<@Alek>
but that's not as important as the proofing. :/
20:53
<~Vornicus>
Alek: that you have to ask a lawyer about
20:53
<@Alek>
I'll paste the letter in pm...
20:53
<&jerith>
Oh, that's a good reason to not take a job offer from the US.
20:53
<@Alek>
jerith: ?
20:53
<&jerith>
American tax bureaucracy. ;_;
20:54
<@Alek>
heh.
20:54
<@Alek>
and I suspect this is a new, automated thing.
20:54
<@Alek>
no humans involved until I send back the explanatory.
20:54
<&jerith>
I watched American TV on the flight from SFO to JFK.
20:55
<&jerith>
There were /several/ ads for people who would fight the IRS on your behalf.
20:55
<@Alek>
yeah, uh, I kinda doubt I wanna pay a lawyer over a measly $800+
20:55
<@Alek>
not to mention I'm broke anyway.
20:56
<&jerith>
South African Revenue Services puts a lot of effort into being the good guy and helping you out.
20:56
<@Alek>
but maybe I can find one who'll do pro bono. or can sue the IRS not only for fixing this but also for his fees. XD
20:57
<&jerith>
They make it very easy to pay your taxes.
20:57
<@Alek>
with a name like that, they'd need all the good PR they can get, jerith. XD
20:58
<&jerith>
If you have a single full-time job, your employer deducts your tax payments from your salary and submits them. Unless you have complicated investments or deductions or whatever, filling in your return is basically "check that the preprinted numbers are right, sign".
20:58
<@Alek>
well? any editors volunteering? >_>
20:59
<@Alek>
jerith: yeah, well, the US tax code is all about the complicated investments and deductions. XD
20:59
<&jerith>
You can do this online as well. It took me ten minutes, most of which was digging out my most recent payslip to get my tax number from it.
20:59
<~Vornicus>
jerith: ideally that's how it works in the US, too
21:00
<@Alek>
albeit, there's tax prep firms and quite decent tax prep software as well.
21:00
<&jerith>
The uncomplicated investments and deductions are also handled automagically.
21:00
<@Alek>
mmn.
21:00
<~Vornicus>
But there's so many bazillions of deductions that literally nobody has their estimated tax deduction correct.
21:00
<@Alek>
what Vorn sez.
21:00
<&jerith>
My health insurance company and my investment people take care of that stuff.
21:00
<&jerith>
Vornicus: That's a large part of the problem.
21:01
<&jerith>
We did away with a bunch of that, and as a result everyone's paying less tax because it's being more efficiently collected.
21:01
<@Alek>
the estimated deduction only counts the estimated income for the year and a basic deduction of your dependents, nothing else. although you can fine-tune it manually, by adding or subtracting a fixed amount to be deducted from each check.
21:03
<@Alek>
jerith: yeah, all the SMART people agree the tax code needs to be cleaned up, but the US government, the Department of the Treasury (which includes the IRS) included, is a very firmly entrenched bureaucracy.
21:03
<@Alek>
at this point, not much short of a revolution can fix it. D:
21:03
<~Vornicus>
Well, no, the real thing is
21:03
<~Vornicus>
everyone has their favorite deduction.
21:03
<@Alek>
pretty much every congressperson and senator is invested in keeping the tax code complex.
21:04
<@Alek>
not overall, really, but because, just as you say, each has their favorite item in the code that "MUST STAY!" or "MUST BE ADDED!"...
21:05
<@Alek>
it's all self-perpetuating now. D:
21:06
<@Alek>
so. nobody wants to proof? :(
21:06
<~Vornicus>
I can proof, I thought you were PMing it to me.
21:06
<@Alek>
sorry, didn't notice you volunteering. XD
21:06
<@Alek>

21:07 * jerith doesn't have the brain for it at the moment.
21:07
<@Alek>
eh, that's fine. thanks anyway.
21:11 * Vornicus builds random ridiculous graphs.
