I'd like to request a little advice, probably for Linux, and this seems the most appropriate place. My father is going on an extended kayak trip soon. He wishes to bring along a laptop and update a blog daily while he is on the trip. Power will be difficult to come by. He has a solar panel that will take ten hours to charge his laptop. This is too slow. We're pondering how to reduce power consumption.
18:52
< ErikMesoy>
The difficult way seems to be buying something like an OLPC. This is secondary. For now we're considering getting something like Damn Small Linux and running that to minimize power consumption as far as possible. However, we also need something that can connect to internet via the 3G card in a cellphone, and preferably also have certain advanced functions like lowering screen refresh rate.
18:52
<@AnnoDomini>
Purchase one of the laptops that have optimized power usage.
18:52
<@AnnoDomini>
Those can last for ten hours.
18:56
< ToxicFrog>
Yeah, I'm not sure how much or even if something like DSL would help here
19:02
<@Vornicus>
DSL has fewer things in it and fewer services, but turning off services is only a small part of what you need to do to reduce power consumption.
19:02
< ErikMesoy>
We're guessing at lowering screen refresh rate to around 10Hz which should be enough for posting to a blog. What else?
19:03
<@Vornicus>
See if you can find one that doesn't need backlight to be visible.
19:04
< Tarinaky>
You might be able to undervolt the system.
19:05
<@Vornicus>
Also, if power is hard to come by, what about Internet? You can't blog without internet.
19:05
< Namegduf>
Damn Small Linux is *no longer maintained*.
19:05
< ErikMesoy>
^^ "However, we also need something that can connect to internet via the 3G card in a cellphone"
19:05
< Namegduf>
And has not been for a long, long time.
19:05
<@Vornicus>
Aha.
19:05
< Namegduf>
People recommending distros need to keep current more.
19:05
< Namegduf>
:P
19:06
< ErikMesoy>
This is why we're poking at Linux distros since we have some interesting software requirements like that too.
19:06
< ErikMesoy>
Namegduf: DSL has easy name recognition. :P
19:06
< Tarinaky>
Namegduf: For the purposes DSL was designed for it doesn't really need to be current :/
19:06
<@Vornicus>
But I mean, are you going to get 3g... on an extended kayaking trip?
19:06
< Namegduf>
Tarinaky: Disagree.
19:06
< ErikMesoy>
He's had cellphone contact before so we figure yes.
19:06
< Namegduf>
Outdated software is a pain regardless.
19:07
< Namegduf>
Tarinaky: It'd also be silly anyway because there are more up to date minimalist distros.
19:07
< Tarinaky>
ErikMesoy: Regular Cellservices != 3G.
19:07
< Tarinaky>
Namegduf: It doesn't take much to make a minimalist distro... there's not a whole lot to do >.>
19:08
< Tarinaky>
Anyway. I must go.
19:08
< Tarinaky>
My planet needs me!
19:08
< Namegduf>

19:08

Sometimes I do in fact want to shift a corner of a polygon to fiddle with proportions.
19:17
<@Vornicus>
Polygon reshaps often seems a lost art in drawing tools.
19:18
< Orthia>
I can't even find a skew button.
19:19
< Orthia>
It is frustrating, because so much /else/ of the interface is lovely and kittens
19:19
< Orthia>
Yet some fairly fundamental alterations seem to elude me.
19:22
< Orthia>
I would also like to be able to modify items symmetrically.
19:22
< Orthia>
I believe this part is possible, actually
19:22
< Orthia>
But it's getting the initial shape so I can mirror it, /then/ start tweaking.

I kinda like how MMIX does that. technically it's bigendian, but it will automatically realign the various-sized fetches to the appropriate size -- so if you send it an address = 7 (mod 8), it will give you the least significant byte/wyde/quad/octa
21:48
<@TheWatcher>
Also, there has to be some way to stop Avast's realtime monitors checking X traffic short of turning them all off, as this is silly
