Alek: Oh, man, that takes me back. I remember my dad, who was a Perl programmer, taking me to a talk about that module, by its creator, when I was a teen. Must have been about 20 years ago now!

<@macdjord>
The author mentioned getting a quite amusing email from a Romanian dev who found that a natural and intuitive way to program, and related the 'oh, /duh/' moment when he realized that 'Romania -> ROME-ania', so, yes, they probably speak something a lot closer to classical Latin than most people~

<@macdjord>
Reading that document is both hilarious and a sharp reminder of why I /do not program in Perl anymore/.

<@celticminstrel>
I don't think Romanian is all that close to Classical Latin…
01:18
<@celticminstrel>
It probably is a bit closer than most of the other Romance languages tho.

I definitely recall being told as a kid that Romanian was the Romance language closest to Vulgar Latin, yeah
08:04
<&McMartin>
That was mumblety-mumble years ago, and I don't remember where (Spanish class, maybe?) but many of my teachers were also full of shit, so I dunno

celticminstrel, McMartin: It's also possible the Romanian in question happened to be a Latin scholar for completely unrelated reasons and the guy who wrote the mode was just /wrong/.

<@macdjord>
For that matter, that documentation describes the regex syntax but says it hasn't been implemented yet; given how core regex functionality is to Perl, I question whether any Perl developer could use that module to any serious purpose no matter how natural they found it.
