00:52 * McMartin taps his fingers, as he faces The Hardest Problem
00:53
<&McMartin>
I have a population, and I'm dividing it up, and then I'm dividing it up differently.
00:53
<&McMartin>
I'm trying to name the population that ends up with a different classification across these two divisions.
00:53
<&McMartin>
The best I have right now is "residue" and I'm not a fan
00:56
<@macdjord>
McMartin: 'Migrants'?
00:56
<@macdjord>
'Differential'?
01:00
<@macdjord>
'Irregularities'?
01:02
<&McMartin>
"Migrants" is probably the best but it's also potentially too on the nose to be acceptable.
01:03
<&McMartin>
... but if I switch to talking about the divisions rather than the populace within them, that gives me "destinations" and that is very promising.

16:45 * abudhabi_ updates packages, manager asks to install a new kernel version.
16:45 * abudhabi_ has learned from experience and checks how much space is on /boot!
16:47
<@TheWatcher>
heheh
16:47
<@TheWatcher>
Always wise
16:47
<@TheWatcher>
(You'd think it could check and warn you ahead of time; it's not like it knows how big the install is or anything....)
16:51
< abudhabi_>
Yeah, it's absurd.
16:51
< abudhabi_>
I've had this problem often enough over the years that it seared into my memory.
16:55
< abudhabi_>
The recent versions of Mint have automatic pruning of old kernels, which you can enable.
16:55
< abudhabi_>
But still don't warn you ahead of time that you don't have sufficient room to install a new one.

< Alek>
this also happens with quite a few game launcher updates.
18:52
< Alek>
the installs tell you how much space you have and they'll take. updates? no, they don't check or tell you, even when they bloat the install size by dozens of gigs.

<@gnolam>
Ah yes. Linux 1) not checking the amount of free space, 2) not deleting old kernels and 3) breaking completely should they run out of space during an update. The bane of so many of my VMs.
