Hmmm, did anyone here ever know how to create a multi-boot USB drive for multiple distros without using some tool? Using grub, grub2, lilo, or anything? That's something that's always bothered me. Apparently, there is a project called Ventoy now where you copy the .iso images to the USB disk and run the script and it will create multi-boot. Works with legacy or UEFI boot (secure mode

incl).

Despite having Yumi and Ventoy, it's always nice knowing how to do things somewhat more manually.

Well, even if nobody knows how to manually create a multi-boot USB stick, any recommendations for some distros to slap on there? I might be getting lots of computer work in the neat future.

I generally use as stripped-down a Debian as is practical for the given situation unless there's a compelling reason to use something else.

Yossarian: Multi-boot USB drive for multiple distros: I've done this, but not using plain ISO images -- I extracted the kernel, initrd, and (if applicable) rootfs image to the USB stick and added SYSLINUX entries to boot them directly.
11:42
<&ToxicFrog>
At the time directly booting isos was unreliable and poorly supported.
11:43
<&ToxicFrog>
I'm not sure how ventoy does it, but since you just need to install it on the stick once and can then add more isos post hoc, it's pretty convenient.
11:46
<&ToxicFrog>
As for what distros to put on it -- I generally start with some stand-alone tools: memtest86, x86test, HDAT2, and HDT
11:46
<&ToxicFrog>
Also usually toss freeDOS in there because it's tiny and some firmware updaters and stuff need to run from DOS
11:46
<&ToxicFrog>
For actual linuxes, TinyCore and Puppy are useful because they are tiny (good if all you have to work with is an old 128MB stick or something) and will boot on a potato; for non-potato use I generally drop openSUSE and NixOS on.

I wonder how ventoy does it, then

Not sure, but there are definately initrd's that are hard-coded to try and mount the CD and load stuff

haven't looked at it yet, but given I'm up to my ass in machines and it works with UEFI and legacy that'd be nice
