< Yossarian>
I need some strange technical help. I just took on a customer who wants me to backup and format their laptop. However, they accidentally deleted some rare family photos and a short movie clip or two.
05:36
< Yossarian>
Laptop is running Windows 10 and I'm sure that the files are still on the filesystem, like, Win 10 hasn't done linux's equivalent of 'sync' and the space where the files used to reside are not overwritten.
05:36
< Yossarian>
I've looked at some tools via DDG & Google but they're all - yea we'll show you what files are recoverable but you have to pay money for a license to get them.
05:37
< Yossarian>
Is there a particular piece of software or perhaps a distro that I can load onto USB drive to boot to that doesn't require a license that I might restore the client's precious memories in their lost digital form?
05:44
< Yossarian>
The guys who make CCleaner make a tool called Recuva that has a free version. I remember when I was using Windows and supporting clients back then that CCleaner was a pretty powerful tool for rooting out malware.
05:49
<@sshine>
actually, 'git diff' is another good use-case for less -R -F -X
05:50
<@sshine>
Yossarian, shoot, I have no clue.
05:52
< Yossarian>
Recuva has a 1GB limit but Puran File Recovery has no limit.

Lennart Pottering wants to create homed to change how $HOME works?
07:41
< Yossarian>
well systemd-homed apparently?
07:47
< Yossarian>
they're gonna replace /etc/shadow with a json file
08:56
<&[R]>
Wasn't CCleaner scumware?
08:56
<&[R]>
Apparently not, but there was a malware version

Yossarian, and so on and so forth, until the system is better described as Systemd/Linux?
10:24
<&[R]>
Well it now also does containerization, chroot, network management, RNG, and so forth
10:39
<@TheWatcher>
I was going to ask /why/ they need to change how $HOME works, but then, the question rather answers itself...
10:40
<@Tamber>
Because Change Is Good!
10:40
<&[R]>
Because it's Lennart?
10:41
<&[R]>
Also that's pretty old news now (the $HOME thing
10:46
<@TheWatcher>
I don't use systemd, so wouldn't know really >.>
