12:37 * simon_ has a habit of running `git blame` when his WTF threshold is exceeded. this time I'm refactoring some 3rd party authentication code that is overwhelmingly nice written. turns out it was one of the first tasks that a fellow co-worker was given when he started as a student worker 7 years ago.

<@celmin|away>
Overwhelmingly nicely written, huh?
12:44
<@celmin|away>
Am I supposed to take that literally or sarcastically?
12:44
<@TheWatcher>
That's a commentary on the world of code in general, that is.
13:00
< simon_>
celmin|away, literally.
13:00
< simon_>
celmin|away, I'm just amazed at how people who've worked here for 20+ years break builds constantly, and some of the best developers we have were just as good when they started part-time while studying.

It's almost like he cares about code and wanted to follow a career path where he could code
13:03
< simon_>
there's a national student programming competition, and the CEO likes to offer part-time jobs to those who qualify well there. they're all really good, but the only drawback is that they quit when they inevitably pursue PhDs. few decide to go full-time...
13:23
<@TheWatcher>
honestly, can't say I blem 'em

< simon_>
TheWatcher, nah, not really. code Perl for a job site vs. three years of paid learning :)
13:52
< simon_>
hmm, so I noticed a co-worker added a pretty neat helper function that I want to popularize. so I refactored the codebase a bunch of places to use this helper function, and I thought I'd Cc everyone who contributed lines that got affected, to inform them that you can now do this thing instead.
13:53
< simon_>
I wonder if that's an aggressive code review policy... if not, I'm thinking about extracting the names of those whose lines you affected in your last commit (perhaps along with the filename).
