I want to see if they are "true" questionmarks, or if they still contain unusual character information that could be recovered/rendered somehow. The first approach that comes to mind is copying to a plaintext file and going at it with a hex editor. Better suggestion? |

The bizarro caricatures turn out to be ligatures in the original. (ti, tt, ft). Copying text directly from PDF to Notepad++ converts the ligature symbols into mundane questionmarks. |
