<@macdjord|slep>
So, my new dual-band router arrived today. I have some questions:
00:49
<@macdjord|slep>
Should I set up the 5ghz network with the same SSID as the 2.4ghz, or different?
00:49
<@macdjord|slep>
If I set them up using the same SSID, how do I check which one my Win10 laptop is actually connecting to?
00:50
<@macdjord|slep>
If I set them up separately, how do I tell my laptop which is preferred?
00:50
<@macdjord|slep>
(Note: I am about to go abed. But I will read any replies when I get up.)

<&McMartin>
macdjord|slep: Different SSIDs, and your Wi-Fi configuration screen will have a list of preferences that are tested in order. That said, I would normally recommend telling it to only attempt to connect to one of them.
01:00
<&McMartin>
My Win10 machine has no WiFi, but I suspect that there will be a button to open priority preferences of some kind if you (possibly right- or double-) click the little Wi-Fi Radio icon in the lower right.
01:01
<@celticminstrel>
I really need to figure out why the power management thing refuses to sleep.
01:01
<@celticminstrel>
IIRC the log when I try says "waking due to EHCI" or something similar.
01:03
<&McMartin>
EHCI is the USB protocol, so maybe some device is being chatty or demanding?
01:03
< Mahal>
Different SSID's is best
01:03
<@celticminstrel>
Maybe, but how am I supposed to figure out which one!
01:04
< Mahal>
e.g. HomeWifis-5 and HomeWifis
01:04
<&McMartin>
I think celticminstrel means "which USB device keeps waking up my computer"
01:04
< Mahal>
I solve this myself by not connecting my laptop to the 2.4ghz network ever
01:04
< Mahal>
Yes, I'm answering macdjord|slep not celticminstrel :D
01:05
<&McMartin>
(If there isn't any obvious other candidate, my suspicion would be "mouse"
01:05
<&McMartin>
)
01:06
<@celticminstrel>
Hmm.
01:06
<@celticminstrel>
I don't know how I'd test that though.
01:07
<@celticminstrel>
I did also wonder if somehow the other computer is interfering through the KVM switch...
01:08
<&McMartin>
Are the actual links to the KVM USB or PS/2?
01:08
<@celticminstrel>
USB
01:09
<&McMartin>
Well, that's an easy test at least; unplug KVM, see if it still is waking up
01:09
<@celticminstrel>
So IOW plug directly into the computer instead of into the KVM.

I'm actually saying "Don't have anything at all plugged in at sleep time"
01:10
<&McMartin>
For the first test.
01:10
<@celticminstrel>
Well uh, that's kinda impossible?
01:10
<@celticminstrel>
Or wait, I guess it is possible, I think I can sleep with the power button...
01:10
<@celticminstrel>
I was about to say there's no way to sleep if I unplug the mouse and keyboard.
01:10 Derakon[AFK] is now known as Derakon
01:11
<@celticminstrel>
Yeah, it's set to sleep if I push (but don't hold) the power button, so I guess I can try that.

<Nilium> .. Also why does Chrome have two cat subprocesses
03:50
<&[R]>
<Nilium> This is going to be one of those cases where I go "why does slack run pgrep?"
04:00
<&McMartin>
Chrome uses process isolation, right? If two isolated processes independently decided they needed cat...
04:01
<&[R]>
Sure
04:01
<&[R]>
But why do they need cat to begin with?
