Oh gross, this sound chip has no envelope generator, and you have to step down each voice's volume manually if you want notes to fade

<&ToxicFrog>
Can I ask someone without a google-hosted email address to help me test something?
11:43
<@TheWatcher>
Sure
11:44
<@TheWatcher>
I run my own mailserver, so what do you need?
11:45
<&ToxicFrog>
I need to send you a bunch of messages from @ancilla.ca addresses, and then have you send me those messages with all headers intact.
11:45
<@TheWatcher>
Righto

<@TheWatcher>
No worries, I'll be around until 13:00 GMT or so
12:00
<&ToxicFrog>
TheWatcher: ok, sent you seven test messages.
12:02
<@TheWatcher>
Okay, got them, one sec
12:04
<@TheWatcher>
And sent back :)
12:04
<&ToxicFrog>
Thank you!
12:10
<&ToxicFrog>
Ok. Verdict: mostly works but I have a bug report to file against GMAIL-SMTPD
12:12
< Vorntastic>
Now I'm curious
12:17
<&ToxicFrog>
Vorntastic: so, on inbound mail, gmail (including GAFYD) treats foo+bar@ the same as foo@
12:18
<&ToxicFrog>
On outbound mail sent via SMTP things get a bit weird, apparently
12:19
<&ToxicFrog>
If the From: line matches one of that user's configured aliases, everything works fine
12:20
<&ToxicFrog>
If it matches one of the aliases with a + suffix, it strips the suffix and adds a Sender: Name <actual_username@host> header
12:20
<&ToxicFrog>
if it doesn't match any alias, it replaces the From: with the actual username
12:20
<&ToxicFrog>
In the latter two cases, no warning is given to the user that this will happen
12:21
<&ToxicFrog>
The mail is just silently sent with the wrong envelope and headers
12:22
< Vorntastic>
Aha
12:23
<&ToxicFrog>
The good news is that none of this appears to affect DKIM cleanliness or spamassassin's opinion of it in general.
13:06
<@TheWatcher>
I really should set up dkim on starforge

Ahem. As I was saying...
16:17
<@mac>
Mahal: So, I ran the 'ping gateway; ping google' test you suggested. Gateway dropped approximately 2/3rds as many packets as google did; additionally, I managed to catch the disconnection that happened ~10 minutes ago, and it coincided with a bock of dropped-on-both packets, plus one 'General failure' which google tells me means 'no IP interface configured'.
16:17
<@mac>
I think this means the problem is solidly on the wifi side of things.
16:18
<@mac>
Any suggestions on how to further diagnose or correct it? 'Cause all I can think of is running a very long ethernet cable across the house.

< Emmy>
mac: analysed wifi channels yet?
16:36
<@mac>
Emmy: How would I do that?
16:37
< Emmy>
take one smartphone, say, an android, download a wifi analyzer app
16:38
< Emmy>
those apps take a look at all the wifis you can receive and output it some graphical data
16:38
< Emmy>
allowing you to see if your wifi isn't overpowered by a lot of others on the same channel
16:39
< Emmy>
and then you can also walk about in the house and see if your reception has any 'dead spots'

Emmy-Noms: Thank you for the suggestion. It does look like it might be channel saturation that's the problem. Unfortunately, /all/ the 2.5gHz channels are overloaded here, and our router doesn't support the 5GHz band. On the plus side, we now have a clear upgrade path.
