Okay, so now I need either an alternate font library (instead of SDL_ttf... which admittedly isn't that great anyway) or a way to copy from an SDL surface to an SDL+OpenGL window. SDL_BlitSurface does not appear to work (which isn't all that surprising).

I would've considered SDL_CreateTextureFromSurface... but that works with an SDL_Renderer, rather than an OpenGL context. (I would guess an SDL_Renderer uses an OpenGL context internally, so maybe I can still make that work somehow? I dunno?)
