That feel when a single variable across half a dozen projects is misnamed because it was copy-pasted from a single origin.

one of the worst things about having a dutch version of MSO is that i have absolutely no idea what some things in the UI are because they're in dutch
13:11
< [R]>
What's Micro Soft Online?
13:13
< Emmy>
miscrosoft office, you dimwit. :P
13:14
<@TheWatcher>
Look at it this way: you probably wouldn't be much more enlightened about their purpose if they were in English either, going off how intuitive some of that UI is...
13:15
< Emmy>
Well, no, but then at least i could go to MSDN and learn what it DOES do. :P
13:22
<@gnolam>
Emmy: the worst thing is that they translate the keyboard shortcuts.
13:23
< Emmy>
0.o How so?
13:25
<@gnolam>
So you hit Ctrl+B to bold something, and nothing happens. Fine, you'll have to find it in the gazillion toolbars and click it like a common peasant.
13:25
<@gnolam>
Then, later, you hit Ctrl+F to search for some text and BAM! BOLD! BOLD EVERYWHERE!
13:26
< Emmy>
...why\
13:28
< [R]>
Because MS is silly. Vaste isn't even a word and they still transtlated it!
13:28
< [R]>
Xut isn't either!
13:29
< Emmy>
? vaste? xut?
13:29
< [R]>
C-v and C-x (paste and cut respectively)
13:31
< Emmy>
O, lol XD
13:40 * Emmy grrrrrrs.
13:40
< Emmy>
why in fuck's name is it not possible to refer to a specific record's control in a continuous form!?
13:47 * TheWatcher readsup
13:49
< Emmy>
It's inconsitent, even.
13:50
< Emmy>
*inconsistent.
13:50
< Emmy>
msgbox(me.somecontrol.value) wil perfectly give me what's contained within the currently selected control.
13:51
<@TheWatcher>
I think I will have to try and work xut, and vaste into a program at some point...
13:52
< Emmy>
However, "me.somecontrol.forecolor = vbred" will paint ALL 'somecontrol' on the subform red. :/

more tea for the tea god
14:53
< Emmy>
i demand sacrifices
15:16 * Emmy groans.
15:17
< Emmy>
using a datasheet subform instead of continuous has caused no improvement so far.

seriously, those things are a clusterfuck

They work well enough to display some data or even do some basic data editing, but attempt anything more complicated and WHOO boy are you in for a shitfest.

< sshine>
here's a software architecture problem I've got.
16:27
< sshine>
I've got classes QuarterlySavedUri and StaticSavedUri that both derive from an abstract class BaseSavedUri. they're stored in each their table and I have separate database getter methods. it'd make sense to make separate save methods, too.
16:29
< sshine>
currently they're listed on a page that groups them and parses both into a List<BaseSavedUri>. I could make a shared save method that switches on 'if (savedUri is QuarterlySavedUri) { ... } else if (savedUri is StaticSavedUri) { ... } else { fail }', but this begs for errors when I forget to update this code with a future third option.
16:30
< sshine>
if the objects themselves were responsible for providing a save method, I could call baseSavedUri.SaveToDatabase() or whatever. but currently my entity objects aren't infected with such database calls. I wonder how to place responsibility with the class, but keep the database and entity layer separate.
16:34
< sshine>
maybe through an interface IDatabasedSavedUri : ISavedUri { public abstract Save(...) } and then a class DatabasedQuarterlySavedUri : IDatabasedSavedUri { ...take a regular QuarterlySavedUri and enrich it with a Save()... }

so, saving my two kinds of URIs now looks like this: http://lpaste.net/5540063192530550784 -- they're very much alike, except QuarterlyUriHardcodings have an Fk_CompanyEventId and SharedUriHardcodings have an Fk_CompanyId. does it make sense to isolate some of the common code of these two functions, or is that a bad idea?
