<@Wulfric>
How do I tell Mint that I wish to use the USB dongle headset instead of the built-in shit?
19:52
<@Tamber>
Right-click the volume icon and see if there's a thing to let you choose what audio device to use.
19:53 Kindamoody|afk is now known as Kindamoody
19:57
<@Alek>
I had to do that after upgrading Aunt's lappy to win10.
19:57
<@Wulfric>
Hm. I had to turn off the other two sound devices, but it worked.
19:57
<@Alek>
for some reason it switched from speakers to headset. even though there was no headset connected.
19:58
<@Alek>
as in, made it default.
19:58
<@Alek>
so even though there wasn't a headset connected, sound went only to the jack. not to speakers.
20:04
<@Wulfric>
Hrm. The sound's kinda awful on playback.
20:04
<@Wulfric>
With lots of noise.
20:05
<@Wulfric>
Well, not 'lots' but there's a sort of white-noise-ish background sound accompanying normal sound.
20:08 * Alek brainstorms
20:08
<@Alek>
could be a poorly shielded or dirty connection?
20:08
<@Alek>
or damaged wire shielding?
20:09
<@Wulfric>
On a USB thing?
20:09
<@Wulfric>
It certainly sounds like a shielding problem.
20:20
<@Wulfric>
Hrm.
20:20
<@Wulfric>
I'm still getting the buzzing noise when sound is produced.
20:32
<@Wulfric>
Fixed: Plugged it into the other USB port.
20:32
<@Wulfric>
I'm seriously considering getting myself a wizard costume and doing tech support in it.
20:33
<@Wulfric>
Because all of this is magic, and I'm just intoning various Litanies of Maintenance in hopes that the Machine Spirits listen.
20:33
<@froztbyte>
Wulfric: can I quote that elsewhere?
20:34
<@Wulfric>
Sure.

<@Wulfric>
There any way to determine the PID of a malfunctioning process?
21:00
<@Wulfric>
I have a weird leftover from a KDE mixer config window.
21:14
<@[R]>
List the processes (ps aux)
21:15
<@[R]>
If you want to kill something that has an X window though: xkill (WARNING: point and click)
21:23
<@Wulfric>
That's cool to know.
21:23
<@Wulfric>
I solved it by logging off and logging in again.

Re: USB headsets: Many of them end up having devastating audio delays
22:20
<@Wulfric>
This one works fine now.
22:20
<@Wulfric>
I'm also somewhat impressed at how good the KDE mixer is.
22:21
<@Wulfric>
And how pulseaudio works in general.
22:23
<@Tamber>
pulseaudio still has its early reputation hanging over it, unfortunately.
22:28
<@[R]>
Like when it would have 30+ second delays on all audio?
22:28
<@[R]>
(Default setup, standard audio-jack speakers)
22:30
<@Tamber>
Yeah. It was made a default before it was really ready to be anything close to that, imo.
22:31
<&McMartin>
Pulseaudio was where I learned async programming
22:32
<@[R]>
It's pretty bad both times I tried it. Second time was with Fedora, worked great up until I stopped using GNOME... at which point I had to manually start it. Apparently it need some kind of arcane invocation to get it going, and refuses to start as root (despite priviledge dropping being a very well understood technique).
22:32
<&McMartin>
Protip: Don't learn async programming in a language without lambda expressions. >_<
22:33
<@[R]>
Eventually just found switching to ALSA (took me 3-5 hours) easier.
22:33
<@Tamber>
[R], I generally don't start as root, so I haven't noticed that latter issue; but no arcane invocations -- at least, these days. :)
22:34
<@Tamber>
(But I don't have real-time audio demands, so I don't have to do crazy things with it.)
22:35
<@[R]>
I simply wanted mplayer to produce audio with the laptops speakers D:
22:35 * Tamber nods.
22:36
<@Tamber>
Well, not that it really helps any, but my startup invocation is just "pulseaudio --start" :p
22:37
<@Tamber>
Maybe it's better defaults, these days.
22:37
<@[R]>
Maybe, but all the configuration existed (as it was used by GNOME)
22:37 * Wulfric is on Mint/XFCE4.
22:38
<@[R]>
I'm moving to CRUX still, getting started with ratpoison.
22:38
<@Tamber>
[R]: *nods* Perhaps it also helps that I have dbus running by the time it's started; but this is mere speculation.
22:38
<@Wulfric>
What I specifically meant to praise was the ability to switch between all the various options without having to restart anything.
22:39
<@[R]>
X requires dbus now.
22:39
<@[R]>
X ran fine.
22:39
<@Tamber>
Hm.
22:39
<@Tamber>
Weird, then~
22:39
<@Wulfric>
Not any particular performance with applications, which was very varied.
22:39
<@Wulfric>
(I need Skype, Mumble and Chrome, at a minimum, to run right. Getting all three is a pain.)
23:35
<@Alek>
Wulfric: the key to IT isn't in knowing everything. It's in knowing to try various things and to look for answers, and where to look. So yeah, wizardry.
