<&ToxicFrog>
Shouldn't it be â¥
01:12
<&Derakon>
Dunno if that'd work properly on all clients.
01:15
<&ToxicFrog>
It serves has a handy test for whether your client is properly configured~
01:27
<@Alek>
:P
01:27
<@Alek>
my client can see it, but not type it.
01:27
<@Alek>
although I can handily type it in my browser.
01:27
<@Alek>
alt-3
01:28
<@Alek>
ÑиÑа
01:31
<&ToxicFrog>
compose-<-3
01:37
<@Alek>
mactivist. :P
01:46
<&ToxicFrog>
What?
01:55
<@Alek>
nothing, nothing.
01:55
<@Alek>
I kid.
01:55
<&McMartin>
Macs don't have a compose key as a rule
01:55
<@Alek>
well, it's certainly not on windows keyboards.
01:56
<&McMartin>
ελλενικη
01:56
<&McMartin>
It's usually mapped to right windows if you have it enabled.
01:56
<&Derakon>
Macs just dedicate one of their meta keys to generating special characters
01:56
<@Alek>
how do you enable that?
01:56
<&Derakon>
E.g. option+e will put a ? on thet next character you type. ? etc.
01:56
<&Derakon>
And ? is option+2, ? is option+3, etc.
01:57
<&McMartin>
Offhand I'm not sure. I'm typing Greek by dynamically rebinding my keyboard layout with Ctrl-Shift.
01:57
<@Alek>
well, windows does allow mapping different keyboards and switching them with (by default) left alt-shift.
01:57
<&ToxicFrog>
I just mapped capslock to compose
01:58
<&ToxicFrog>
God knows I wasn't using it for anything else
01:58
<@Alek>
hm. left alt-left shift toggles between freely. right alt-right shift doesn't seem to do anything. left alt-right shift switches one way, right alt-left shift switches the other way.
01:59
<@Alek>
that's something I hadn't known.

<@Shiz>
my mac just uses dead keys.
11:57
< RchrdB>
Alek: on windows I use "WinCompose" to turn my menu key into a compose key.
11:58
< RchrdB>
So pressing "menu, <, 3" gets me a â¤
12:38
<@froztbyte>
Tarinaky_: sorry, things started running about yesterday and I didn't get to read then
12:38
<@froztbyte>
generally I find reading the source to be a more truthful experience
12:38
<@froztbyte>
documentation might be out of date, etc
12:38
<@froztbyte>
but the source will tell you exactly what's going on
13:33
<&ToxicFrog>
I would rather have no documentation than lying documentation, but even with the most clearly written source, good documentation is preferred.
13:34
<@froztbyte>
oh, sure, documentation can be a pretty great help
13:34
<@froztbyte>
but hating on reading the source seems like an inefficient approach
13:36
<&ToxicFrog>
Having the option to read the source.
13:36
<&ToxicFrog>
Is good.
13:36
<&ToxicFrog>
Having to read the source is hateworthy, because it means the documentation is either absent, incomplete, or lying.
13:37

13:38
<@froztbyte>
sometimes concepts just don't transfer nicely
13:38
<@froztbyte>
which might be a form of bad communication, or it might just be a "that shape doesn't fit in my head easily" thing
13:38
<@froztbyte>
anyway, I was mostly curious about Tarinaky_'s remark

Anyone know if there are UTF characters for a filled square, empty square, filled circle and empty circle that are actually the same dimensions?
17:09
< abudhabi>
I've found some that are kinda-sorta, depending on where I put them. On Windows and in the terminal, they're OK fits. But on Linux browsers, they are rendered at different sizes.

17:37
<@celticminstrel>
I'd expect them to be the same dimensions as long as they're the same font...
17:40
< abudhabi>
Hmmm. You may be right.
17:41
< abudhabi>
When I copied them to my terminal, then pasted them without formatting back into my HTML editor, they changed size to be right.
17:41
<@celticminstrel>
So, maybe the browser is displaying one in a different font because the requested font doesn't have that character?
17:42
<@Tamber>
Perhaps.
17:45
< abudhabi>
Ugh. Yeah. Probably. It works fine in monospace, but fails everywhere else.
18:30
<@Shiz>
are you sure you don't want <pre>
18:30
<@Shiz>
or event font-family: monospace
18:32
<~Vornicus>
You also want, if there's spaces in it, https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/white-space
18:37
< abudhabi>
I'm using font-family: monospace.
