16:05
< Alek>
odds on it being a scam and/or a potential way to get malware onto my system?
16:09
< gnolam>
Y!M?

Alek: if this isn't a response to a resume you sent then yeah, I'd bet on it being a scam
16:13
< Alek>
it's a response.
16:14
< Alek>
aaaand yikes.
16:15
< Alek>
looks like the latest FF update has crashed the browser because it can't install itself so it keeps looping the start-update-error-close-repeat

< Anno[Laptop]>
This is strange. JA2 ran under WINE takes up only about 25% of a core, but runs rather slowly.
19:57
< Anno[Laptop]>
Tolerably, but slower than when emulated in VB.
20:00
< Anno[Laptop]>
Any idea how to assign a bit more resources to the game or something?
20:06
<@jerith>
CPU usage isn't necessarily the best indicator.
20:06
<@jerith>
It could be maxing out memory bandwidth or something.
20:07
< Anno[Laptop]>
Why is performance worse than emulated?
20:08
<@jerith>
Dunno.
20:09
<@ToxicFrog>
What emulator are you comparing it to?
20:09
<@ToxicFrog>
Oh, virtualbox.
20:10
<@ToxicFrog>
My guess would be: either wine is using a rendering mode that is very slow on your system and VB isn't, or it's using an API that wine has a particularly slow implementation of.
20:10
<@ToxicFrog>
Don't forget that virtualbox is not an emulator but a virtualizer; most of the code runs directly on the CPU.
20:18
< Anno[Laptop]>
Is there anything I can do to alleviate the problem?
20:23
<@ToxicFrog>
Run it in virtualbox?
20:24
<@ToxicFrog>
IME, wine is generally slower than VB, the API translation it does is slower than the ring switches VB does.
20:25
< Anno[Laptop]>
I'd really rather not run it in VB. The game is buggier than an anthill, and has a host of other issues there. It takes less effort to 'kill `pgrep ja2.exe`' than to reboot the VB.
20:25
< simon_>
IME, stuff breaks in wine.
20:27
< simon_>
I installed photoshop and it worked excellently the first time it started, but none of the subsequent runs were non-buggy. so I version-controlled my .wine and resat it.

21:57
< gnolam>
Anything special you had to do to get JA2 to work in WINE?
22:07
< Anno[Laptop]>
Not really.
22:08
< Anno[Laptop]>
I installed the v1.13 patch directly on top of the Gold release.
22:08
< Anno[Laptop]>
I'm back to playing it in VB, since the rendering is mightyslow in WINE.
22:08
< Anno[Laptop]>
Maybe on your hardware it'll run appreciably.

22:17

Prefs->Keyboard->Layout?
22:18
< OhChristRah>
Nope.
22:20
< OhChristRah>
I think I found it.
22:20
< OhChristRah>
"setxkbmap -layout "dk"" Solved it magically.
22:27
< gnolam>
Anno: I was considering trying it on the EEE, you see.
22:29
< gnolam>
(It's got enough power to run JA1 in DOSBox, so...)
