Frickin' Comcast lost my connection sometime yesterday and hasn't mopped it off the floor yet.

< celticminstrel>
I don't think I can ssh to my home computer.
19:01
<@Derakon>
It comes in handy more often than you might think.
19:02
<@Derakon>
My plan this time was to access my giant stash of astronomy photos to make some new backgrounds for the microscope computer. Then I discovered that Windows' support for different backgrounds on different displays can be best summarized as "lolwut?".
19:02
< celticminstrel>
I can do it over the LAN from my laptoop when I'm at home, though.
19:02
< celticminstrel>
^laptop
19:02
< celticminstrel>
But that's not when it'd be most useful.
19:04
<@Derakon>
(It continues to amaze me that, with such huge resources, Microsoft can't handle weird little edge cases like having a two-display system that Apple handles just fine)
19:05
< Tarinaky>
Isn't that an issue for your graphics card drivers/
19:05
< Tarinaky>
+?
19:05
<@Derakon>
...nooooo.
19:05
< celticminstrel>
Didn't Apple already support multiple displays back on System 7?
19:05
<@Derakon>
I'm talking about the image that is shown as a background on your system.
19:05
<@Derakon>
It's set in Windows 7 via the Personalize control panel.
19:06
<@Derakon>
You get one image. It applies to all of your displays individually.
19:06
< Tarinaky>
Oh. Ahah.
19:06
<@Derakon>
Celtic: I'm not talking about generic "support multiple displays", which I've no idea who did first.
19:06
<@Derakon>
This is just "I have two 1080x1920 and one 1920x1200 display. I'd like each to use a different background. Is this really so hard?"
19:07
< Tarinaky>
Why do you want a desktop wallpaper on the microscope PC?
19:07
<@Derakon>
Why do you want a wallpaper on your PC?
19:07
< celticminstrel>
Well, I've never had multiple displays, so I dunno is MacOS7 could do them.
19:07
< celticminstrel>
^ if
19:07
<@Derakon>
(The recommended fix, incidentally, is to make one big image that has all the backgrounds you want, and use that as your background so it spills over onto the other displays properly. Sadly this only works if your primary display is taller than your secondaries)
19:08
< celticminstrel>
If the primary is shorter, can't you just switch them so that the taller is the primary?
19:10
<@TheWatcher>
Dera: as Tarinaky said, afaict microsoft leaves that sort of feature to 3rd parties - I know that nvidia's stuff give you th eoption of spanning backgrounds, or individual images on each screen, I vaguely remember the ATI/AMD/whateveritis does that too
19:10
<@Derakon>
Celtic: switching primary/secondary monitors has all sorts of other implications that would screw other things up.
19:10
< celticminstrel>
Ah.
19:10
<@Derakon>
TW: okay, I'll take a look at it.
19:11
<@TheWatcher>
(if you're on a machine with an nvidia card, you'll need to turn on nView, and from there it's the Desktops tab, set the properties, and you control the background in there)
19:12
<@TheWatcher>
But yes, OSX's handling of wallpaper is much superior, not that this is hard.
