< Tarinaky>
Any academically minded elder-gods about?
02:07
<@Vornicus>
?
02:07
< Tarinaky>
I'm trying to consider how I can bolster my application to Uni in Jan and maybe what I should try and do in terms of portfolio work.
02:08
< Tarinaky>
I mean. Adding a link to a git repository with some demos at least proves I can pass Programming 1. >.>
02:09
< Tarinaky>
Not really sure what I should be concentrating on in order to have something presentable in a limited time-frame though.
02:09
< Tarinaky>
Especially as I have to fit it around job-seeking and, potentially, full-time employment.
02:09
< Tarinaky>
So wondering if anyone had advise :x

I'm trying to consider how I can bolster my application to Uni in Jan and maybe what I should try and do in terms of portfolio work.
10:26
< Tarinaky>
I can partially explain away the dropping out of Uni on mental health and doing the wrong major but I'm worried that my A levels aren't up to snuff :/
10:32
<@TheWatcher>
Hm. What'd you get?
10:32
< Tarinaky>
Physica B, Maths B, Electronics C and AS Computing B.
10:32
< Tarinaky>
*Physics
10:36
<@TheWatcher>
Solid enough, expectially compared to some intake I've seen - it'll probably depend on the admissions people in a pinch though. Depending on where you're thinking of applying, it might be worth looking at doing something maths oriented, though
10:37
< Tarinaky>
I dunno. I keep getting told that there're more students than places :x
10:37
< Tarinaky>
One of the places was Keele but I heard they were kinda popular for Maths so I'm not sure :/
10:37
<@TheWatcher>
Oh, there are. I know for a fact that at least Manchester will not be going into clearing this year :/
10:38
< Tarinaky>
:/
10:39
< Tarinaky>
Fortunately I'm not going through clearing.
10:39
< Tarinaky>
I'm having a year out to rethink my life and maybe restock the college fund >.>
10:40 * TheWatcher nod
10:41
< Tarinaky>
Thinking CS + Maths joint honours.
10:41
< Tarinaky>
But I'm so not confident about actually getting in atm :/
10:42
<@TheWatcher>
Kinda hard to suggest meaningful strategies, in the absence of a clear plan, but one thing I would suggest is trying to obtain the contact details of the programme managers or head of undergrad in whichever schools you apply to and asking them about the sorts of students they like to focus on for intake - what strengths they are looking for.
10:43
<@TheWatcher>
Only thing I'd note there is that joint honours degrees are hellish workload. >.>
10:45
< Tarinaky>
I dunno.
10:46
< Tarinaky>
On the one hand - I want to do the Maths so I can concentrate on the stuff that interests me more (avoid boring crap like databases in favour of interesting crap like computational models)
10:46
< Tarinaky>
On the other hand I have about zero confidence atm.
10:46
< Tarinaky>
So swings and round-abouts :/
10:48
< Tarinaky>
And I have done maths in the physical sciences before - I dunno if that's like or unlike maths itself though :/

AFAIK (IANAM), there's crossover, but pure maths has a lot more scope than applied physical sciences maths

Aye.

11:00
<@TheWatcher>
That statement should have had an exclamation mark at the end ¬¬
11:00
< Tarinaky>
Not sure if it's the same maths with different trappings/problems or different maths though,.
11:00 * Vornicus has asked questions like "how many different sets of rules are there for 7-symbol rock-paper-scissors?"

... rules as in combinations of gestures right?
11:01
<@Vornicus>
I don't know what actually goes into a math degree, but there's a whoooole lot of stuff that you just won't see in the physical sciences.
11:02
<@Vornicus>
What beats what, etc
11:02
<@Vornicus>
there's only one for 5-symbol, and 3 for 7-symbol
11:03
< Tarinaky>
I don;t think I understand the question then.

Given 7 arbitrary symbols, there's 3 ways you can put the rulebook together.
11:04
<@Vornicus>
ignoring things like simply swapping symbols - rock beats paper beats scissors would count as the same as rock beats scissors beats paper.
11:04
< Tarinaky>
Oh! I see what you meant now.
11:15
< Tarinaky>
I dunno. :/
11:15
< Tarinaky>
I don;t want to fail another degree :/
11:41
< Tarinaky>
Mind, it's a ways away I guess :/
11:41
< Tarinaky>
Thanks for the help.
11:42
< Tarinaky>
TheWatcher: So're you at Manchester then?
11:42
< Tarinaky>

<@TheWatcher>
Yep, you don't want to anyway
11:51
<@TheWatcher>
the UG school is a complete fucking mess, right now
11:51
< Tarinaky>
Why? What's wrong there?
11:51 * Tarinaky gets started on his CV so he can apply for some jobs.
11:53
<@TheWatcher>
two big problems: in the second year, the person who used to run the Software Engineering course had a kid, and because of the way she's worked her "return", she doesn't spend enough time in the school to run it anymore, but they have to keep paying her enoughthat it prevents them from hiring anyone to replace her, so other staff have had to take the work on. And because these are computer scientists, she never documented the whole thing
11:53
<@TheWatcher>
properly, and they refuse to teach it as-is because they think they can do it better.
11:54
<@TheWatcher>
net result: utter fucking disaster that has had the second year students on the verge of outright rebellion
11:55
<@TheWatcher>
(rightly so, having been tangentially involved in the online support for it, the three stooges could have run the course better)
11:57
<@TheWatcher>
And then, a few years back, the school started to recognise the fact that the intake was effectively incapable of working like effective students - they lacked a vast array of skills the colleges used to teach, especially things like self-directed learning and problem solving skills - so they created a "problem based learning/how to be a student course"
12:01
<@TheWatcher>
Decent idea, shame the execution was completely stuffed up by politics, infighting, and Egos - staff didn't use the tools properly, refused to learn different methods to teach, and ignored advice on methods and problems. It's run for three years, and almost none of the highly visible problems have been addressed because the people in charge of it are of the old "write a course once, run it for 5 or 10 years and it's still good" mentality
12:02
<@TheWatcher>
So, yeah, complete mess.
12:03
<@TheWatcher>
I think it's the first time in the 10 years I've worked there I've heard of written formal complaints about serious course failings
