What happened to Vorn at anyrate
08:54
<@Reiver>
He moved to Utah.
08:54
<@Reiver>
He hasn't got his internet set up there, yet.
08:55
<@Chalcedon>
ahhhh.... did he get a job there?
08:56
<@Reiver>
He did!
08:56
<@Reiver>
He is now working for a Chalain, whom you have not met, but is an extremely... interesting person.

<@Chalcedon>
interesting?
09:07 * EvilDarkLord eyes, waves.
09:07
<@Reiver>
Hihi.
09:07
<@Reiver>
If you're a coder, it may be worth hanging around.
09:08
<@Reiver>
If not, you're going to be bored outta your mind. ;)
09:09
< EvilDarkLord>
I kinda figured that would be the case. I'm a coder newbie, so I may occasionally provide stupid questions to poke fun at =)
09:09
<@Reiver>
Ah, those are welcome.
09:09
<@Reiver>
Chalcedon is also learning, and I am...
09:09
< EvilDarkLord>
Is the focus on the channel on some specific language?
09:09 * Chalcedon waves
09:09
<@Chalcedon>
nope
09:09
<@Reiver>
A modestly experinced coder who is so rusty that he's forgotten all the syntax and half the principles. >.<
09:10 * Reiver is currently learning Java, and how to do OO programming /properly/. :)
09:10 * EvilDarkLord is just finishing up Java 101, take two. This time actually reading the course material properly.
09:11
<@Chalcedon>
initially we were discussing Python, but TF regularly rants about Lua, and I'm sure other stuff has come up, I just didn't pay attention
09:11
<@Reiver>
*snrk*
09:12
<@Reiver>
Speaking of which, I need to buy that text book.
09:12
<@Chalcedon>
and as a total newbie, I've found that people here are helpful and friendly, though may get slightly irritated if you ask /really/ dumb questions
09:14
<@Reiver>
Yes. Thinking about the question first - and trying to look things up on google - helps.
09:19
< EvilDarkLord>
I'm guessing I won't have a lot of questions yet that the course material and Google can't answer, but it could be interesting to see what kind of things people talk about. Is there much activity here?
09:19
<@Chalcedon>
it depends
09:20
<@Chalcedon>
initially lots and lots, recently not so much because people often aren't in the same place at the same time?
09:20
<@Chalcedon>
-er- -?
09:22
<@Reiver>
There tends to be a lot of backscroll-chat.
09:22
<@Reiver>
AKA: Folks will ask something, a few hours later someone knowedgeable will wander in, see the question in the backscroll, and start replying. :)

< TheWatcher[wr0k]>
Reiver: which textbook?
09:52
<@Reiver>
TW: Head First Java, apparently.
09:52
<@Reiver>
I need it mostly because 97% of the slides the lecturer uses are, uh, out of the textbook.
09:52
<@Reiver>
Ergo.
09:52
< TheWatcher[wr0k]>
-_-
09:53
<@Reiver>
Oh, he does it /well/.
09:53
<@Reiver>
He takes what's in the book and builds off it.
09:53
<@Reiver>
But the slides are, um, yes. I kind of need that book. ;)
09:58
< TheWatcher[wr0k]>
Well, you might want to have a look at Thinking In Java too - there's free downloads of previous editions of th ebook at http://mindview.net/Books/TIJ/DownloadSites It's pretty good, has exercises and solutions in it. Probably isn't good for the first-time coder, but it's good for getting a handle on java
10:01 * Reiver nodnods.
10:02 * Reiver mostly needs to work out how to get eclipse working, or failing that, find $random_code_writing_program.
10:02
<@Reiver>
ALthough eclipse seems kinda nice...
10:02
< TheWatcher[wr0k]>
my $random_code_writing_program = "/usr/bin/emacs"; # naturally ;)
10:03
< TheWatcher[wr0k]>
Hm
10:03
<@Reiver>
Oh, eclipse is running.
10:03
<@Reiver>
On the windows box. ¬¬
10:03
< TheWatcher[wr0k]>
Anyway, did you check whether you had the universe and multiverse repositories enabled on kubuntu?
10:03
<@Reiver>
No, because I forgot how and then got tired. >.<
10:04
< TheWatcher[wr0k]>
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Kubuntu#head-775cf32093c1bb05fef1 e24465c9be753d760275 has de^H^Hinstructions.
10:06
<@Reiver>
has de--?
10:06 * Reiver curiouses, as he can't guess that one.
10:06
<@Reiver>
:p
10:06
< TheWatcher[wr0k]>
destructions ;)
10:08
<@Reiver>
Hehehe!
10:08 * Reiver patpat.
10:08
<@Reiver>
Thankye.
10:09
< TheWatcher[wr0k]>
Once you've got that enabled, you might be able to install eclipse straight off, or you might need to install a Java SDK first and then install it

10:33
< TheWatcher[wr0k]>
Quite likely. I'd hope that apt would fetch in automagically during dependency resolution, but I'm a gentoo user so I'm used to things wworking a bit differently
10:37 * Mahal is used to Redhat.
10:37
< Mahal>
