<@thalass>
So. I'm not really very good at coding, but I'm pretty sure that having a UI hard coded to a certain width and height is considered shitting programming, yes?
10:02
<@Julius>
More like lazy.
10:12
<@TheWatcher>
And generally not the good sort of lazy

<@thalass>
The husband of the CEO of the company my wife works for won the contract to write a revamped all-in-one program for the company. It's fairly crap, apparently, and the latest thing is since nobody makes 4:3 monitors anymore the company had to buy widescreen ones. But that means he has to go in and recode the program to that size. But not everyone got the widescreen mointors so it screws them up.
10:37
<@thalass>
And I thought "wait, can't you just go width=100%" or something?"
10:42
<@Azash>
It sounds like competence was not the number one factor in that decision
12:08 * Azash has to register as a developer on Facebook, grumbles
12:09
<@Azash>
I don't know what's worse when having to choose whether FB gets my credit card details or phone number
12:10
<@Julius>
Why do you have to give it either?
12:13
<@Azash>
So I can register as a developer on Facebook
12:14
<@Julius>
Why are you registering as a developer on Facebook?
12:14
<@Julius>
What does that even mean?
12:14
<@Azash>
For work
12:14
<@Azash>
It means I can make apps
12:14
<@Julius>
OK.
12:15
<@TheWatcher>
Use work's phone number or credit card, then~
12:15
<@Julius>
Yeah.
12:15
<@Julius>
"Hey, boss, what's your CC number?"
12:15
<@Azash>
Lol
12:15
<@Azash>
TheWatcher: That's a fair point, I actually got my work phone this week so
12:15
<@Azash>
I ahve already woken up twice in a panic over the email sound
12:15
<@Azash>
:P
12:16
<@Julius>
Oh, and if you're not required to do so, make up a fictional identity.
12:16
<@Julius>
s/to do so/give your real details/
12:17
<@Azash>
required give real details
12:17
<@Julius>
-to
12:17
<@Azash>
But yeah
12:17
<@Julius>
Bah.
12:17
<@Azash>
Maybe I'll make a page for myself and ask clients to like it
12:19
<@Julius>
I had to register on FB once, to make a company page for us, but I made up a fake name, and used a generic company email address.
13:04
<@Julius>
Anyone knowledgeable about MySQL used from Java?
13:05
<@Julius>
I'm getting warnings in the console that my webapp is failing to unregister the driver (and that it gets unregistered anyway). But I can't seem to find anything about the subject of unregistering drivers on the interwebs.
13:09 * TheWatcher eyes this web page in work
13:10
<@TheWatcher>
It uses the colour #FF9966 in places
13:10
<@TheWatcher>
This apparently goes by the name "Atomic Tangerine"
13:10
<@TheWatcher>
I am deeply amused by this.
13:11
<@gnolam>
Ah, the soundtrack to "Miracle Mile".~

Ohgods so ery much that.
14:09
<&ToxicFrog>
macdjord|slep: it is, isn't it
14:09
<@TheWatcher>
+v
14:09
<&ToxicFrog>
thalass: if you are using a proper GUI framework (or, you know, HTML) it is generally easier to make a UI that scales to screen size (although not always well) than to make a fixed size one.
14:10
<&ToxicFrog>
If you're using SDL or something or the VB gui maker, lolno.

Goddamnit.

No Linux on Durandal, looks like, since neither of the wifi cards it has have working Linux drivers

<@froztbyte>
ToxicFrog: possible to replace them?
19:12
<&ToxicFrog>
froztbyte: yes, but not with anything I have in the house
19:19
<@iospace>
i just did a select(*) count on a join of our two largest tables ._.
19:19
<@iospace>
let's see how long this takes
19:19
<@iospace>
for science
19:25
<&ToxicFrog>
froztbyte: so doing anything linuxy with Durandal will require waiting until I can go out and get yet another fucking wireless card
19:26
<@froztbyte>
haha
19:27
<@iospace>
30 minutes...
19:27
<@iospace>
and the worst part is, this script is gonig to get longer T_T
19:36
<@iospace>
fucking hell, nearly 40 minutes
19:36
<@iospace>
and still chugging :<
20:30 Kindamoody is now known as Kindamoody[zZz]

<&jeroud>
iospace: I just started a pair of data migrations that will probably take a fortnight to complete.
21:09
<@iospace>
we're over 2:10 now
21:09
<&jeroud>
I've passed half a million messages.
21:10
<&jeroud>
Only another hundred million or so to go!
21:11
<&jeroud>
(With breaks during peak times to avoid making the rest of the system sad.)
21:11
<&jeroud>
ToxicFrog: Why not use wires?
21:12
<&jeroud>
I used to sometimes use my WRT54GL as a glorified wifi card.
22:29
<&McMartin>
"A fun joke: Replace a semicolon (;) with a greek question mark (Íž) in your friend's C# code and watch them pull their hair out over the syntax error"
22:40
<@celticminstrel>
XD
22:40
<@celticminstrel>
I got a syntax error in my JavaScript recently when I somehow managed to accidentally put a diacritic of some kind one or in front of my "if".
22:40
<@celticminstrel>
^on, not one
22:48
<@Azash>
McMartin: The thing that bothered me already when the original tweet made the rounds
22:48
<@Azash>
Why specifically C#
22:49
<@Tamber>
it was Javascript, the first time I saw that tweet, IIRC.
22:49
<&McMartin>
IIRC C# says "source code is a series of unicode code points"
22:49
<@Azash>
Ah
22:49
<&McMartin>
It can't be C because C restricts itself to an ASCII subset
22:49
<&McMartin>
So if you tried it in C it would just straight-up say "illegal character detected" three times, one for each byte in the UTF-8 decomposition, and the jig would be up
23:00
<&ToxicFrog>
jeroud: because the only way to get a network cable from the router to Durandal involves stringing it right across a heavily trafficked hall and doorway
23:00
<&ToxicFrog>
(and prevents that door from being closed)
23:00
<&ToxicFrog>
As for using a spare router, I gave mine to my then-GF for exactly that purpose~
